Turned out that the suggested fix worked, an unrelated upgrade caused HAL to go away in the interim (which nothing warned about. :) Got the sound working again. I tried removing the rc file and re-logging in, and now there are simply no devices. :) I'll keep trying though. I logged out of kde, in from a terminal I deleted the file $HOME/.kde4/share/config/phonondevicesrc After that I logged in to KDE4 and sound worked for KDE4 (Phonon), too. Hope this helps.
