I think I’m allergic to footballs

December 10th 2007 12:23 am

So I went to a football game today with officers from my ship. Throwing the football before the game, I somehow managed to injure the ring finger on my left hand on a catch. I kept it iced during the game and was able to flex it and everything but it never quite stopped swelling and it eventually bruised really badly.

I have it splinted pretty heavily right now in order to be ready to go to Medical in the morning tomorrow. The sad thing about this is that this is the second time I have injured my hand catching a football (same hand even). When I was in high school I was playing catch and had the ball hit my left pinky instead of my hand and force the outer two finger bones over the innermost one, which I then had to pop out. That hurt a lot, and never fully healed.

I think I’m going to have to stop playing catch with real footballs from now on or something, this is crazy. I’m pretty sure I didn’t dislocate the finger this time, but judging from the continuous swelling I may have fractured the bone. We’ll see tomorrow I guess.

It’s a good thing I finished with Guitar Hero III on Medium yesterday because it’s going to be quite some time before I can play again I would imagine. :(

On an unrelated note, the Indianapolis Colts are beating up on the Ravens pretty bad at this point. Peyton Manning has already been pulled from the game, with 13 completions for 17 attempts, for 249 yards and 4 touchdowns. According to my QB rating calculator he only needed one more completion (even for no yardage!) to get a perfect QB rating of 158.3. His final rating was 157.5.

I’m sorry to hear that, by football I guess you mean american football. Maybe you should try something more fun and not that dangerous for your hands, like real football (european type) where you get to hit the ball with your feet more often. At least you will save your fingers for typing and Guitar Hero if not have more fun. ;)

darken: Yes, I mean American football. I would play soccer (sorry, “REAL” football) more often except that I was once hit in the head with a soccer ball and had stopped breathing for about a minute or so (conscious the whole time to boot). No permanent damage done but that still was a much more distressing injury.

And unless you’re going to bother to try playing American football then how you can try to preach to me about which is more fun? I’ve played football, both soccer and American style, tennis, racquetball, ultimate frisbee, softball, baseball, roller blading, volleyball, wallyball, dodgeball and countless other sports. And I’m obviously not very sports-inclined, but I’ve found all of them to be fun.

Not many injuries in Ultimate Frisbee. That’s also what I like the most..

:) don’t take offence at my joke, it was mainly based on the Guitar Hero idea, maybe you’re just allergic, like you said in your post. sorry if I seemed to be preaching

I can see you never updated this, so let me elaborate.

You not only injured your finger catching a football, but you broke it. It was hardly a dynamic catch, I mean, it was not like you dove for the football for a touchdown in a game-winning effort (although you should have made something up to make it sound fun). The ball hit your hand, and your bone fractured like ice under hot water.

While everyone you know has tormented you (deservedly so) about this incident, it does suck that your follow-up medical care was counterproductive. I mean, immobilize your finger for 3 weeks and come back?

You did get quite good at GH3 with your left hand though. I found that rather impressive. Now gold five star Raining Blood and call it good.
